Since this is so common and I can't sleep, allow me to dispel the phoenix down myth. Phoenix downs don't revive the dead. That's not what they do. They revive unconscious people. In almost every FF other than FF1, when a character hits 0 hp, they go unconscious. They don't die. Phoenix downs revive them from unconsciousness. Same with the life spell, despite the name.
So when someone's killed off in a cutscene and you're wondering why they don't just toss a phoenix down on her, it's because they can't. It won't work.
